About Liberation Day
The active “Liberation Day” URL represents Bangladesh Victory Day, Bijoy Dibosh, on 16 December. It commemorates victory in the 1971 Liberation War and must not be confused with Independence Day on 26 March.

Official sources and date status
Recorded confirmation and independent source review are shown separately. An institution-specific notice does not establish closure for every employer or school.
Official dated 2026 calendar or current legal rule. Bangladesh dates follow the annual government gazette; religious dates and multi-day government leave require annual confirmation.
Office arrangements
Government closure dates come from the annual Ministry of Public Administration notification and any later executive order. Private workplaces should use the applicable labour rules and employer notice rather than assume that the bank calendar defines paid leave.
Bank arrangements
Official accounts describe the Pakistani military’s surrender after a nine-month war and the victory achieved on 16 December 1971. The existing country mapping correctly resolves HolidayID 15 to the dedicated Victory Day master, HolidayID 185.
School arrangements
Bangladesh Bank identifies 16 December as Victory Day in its 2026 holiday list. This supports that year’s banking closure without implying every digital service stops.
History
Victory Day records the surrender of Pakistani forces on 16 December 1971 after the nine-month Liberation War. Independence Day marks the opening declaration on 26 March, so the two national dates answer different historical questions.
Why it matters
Victory Day is one of Bangladesh's most important national commemorations. It honours freedom fighters, civilians and others who suffered or died during the Liberation War and marks the successful conclusion of the struggle for sovereignty. It is distinct from Independence Day on 26 March, which marks the declaration and beginning of the independence struggle.
Observance
National observances include flag raising, wreath-laying at the National Martyrs' Memorial, military and civic ceremonies, cultural programmes and patriotic events. Public buildings and streets display the national flag, while television and other media feature documentaries, historical programmes and Liberation War remembrance.
Travel and planning
Education-sector ceremonies or closures should be verified through the relevant authority and school notice, particularly when programmes occur near term boundaries.
