US Federal Holidays and Federal Holiday Calendar
Use this U.S. federal holiday calendar for the 11 recurring legal public holidays and their official observed closure dates in 2026, 2027, and 2028. It is based on 5 U.S.C. §6103 and OPM schedules for most employees on a standard Monday-to-Friday workweek.

The 11 recurring federal holidays
Federal law names New Year’s Day, the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth National Independence Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
Washington’s Birthday is the statutory federal name. “Presidents Day” is a common alternative used by some states and businesses, but it is not the name in 5 U.S.C. §6103 or the OPM schedule.
Statutory names and observed dates
The legal holiday date and the federal observed closure date are shown distinctly. For most Monday-to-Friday federal employees, a Saturday holiday is observed on the preceding Friday and a Sunday holiday on the following Monday. Alternative work schedules can produce different in-lieu dates.
Confirmed and projected date status
All 2026–2028 federal dates shown here are confirmed from OPM. State holidays, cultural observances, religious observances, and private-employer closures are separate and are not promoted into the federal list.
Federal employees and private workplaces
Many federal offices close on designated federal holidays, but essential services and employees required to work can follow different arrangements. Federal holiday status does not itself close state offices or private workplaces.
Banks and business operations
Federal holiday status does not guarantee that every bank branch or payment service is closed. Many banks use Federal Reserve or federal calendars, but Saturday-holiday treatment can differ: Federal Reserve Banks may remain open on the preceding Friday while the Board of Governors is closed. Verify the institution’s operating notice.
State and school calendars
States, districts, and schools set their own calendars. A federal holiday may be observed by a school, but this page does not establish a nationwide school-closure rule.
Planning around federal holidays
Check the responsible agency, court, postal operator, museum, transit provider, or business before travel. Observed Fridays and Mondays can affect services even when the statutory anniversary falls on a weekend.
