The holiday forms part of the Christian Easter season and is expressly named in Ireland's statutory public-holiday schedule. It also has a distinctive place in Irish historical memory because the 1916 Easter Rising began on Easter Monday.
Ireland has ten public holidays. The February holiday falls on the first Monday in February, except when 1 February is Friday. Good Friday is not one of the statutory public holidays. When a public holiday falls at the weekend, the employment benefit does not automatically turn the next Monday into a public holiday. The calendar therefore retains the actual dates of Christmas and St Stephen's Day without inventing substitute Mondays.
