Federal public bodies are closed on Paixão de Cristo in the official 2026 calendar, with essential services maintained. Local public offices and private employers follow the law and schedule applicable to their municipality and workplace, so the precise legal basis is not identical everywhere.
FEBRABAN lists Good Friday as a national banking holiday in 2026, so branches do not open for normal service. PIX and self-service channels generally remain available, while business-day processing resumes after the holiday.
Many schools close on Good Friday or include it in an Easter break, but education calendars are administered locally and institutionally. Check the state, municipal or private-school calendar for the exact length of the recess.
The observance came to Brazil through Portuguese Catholic tradition and developed into local church services, processions and Passion plays. Its legal basis needs care: Law 9,093/1995 places religious holidays under municipal law, permits up to four according to local tradition and expressly includes Good Friday within that limit.
Good Friday combines religious significance with a broad interruption to normal services. It is not one of the fixed dates listed in Law 662/1949, but it is widely observed under local law and appears as Paixão de Cristo in the federal public administration's 2026 holiday calendar.
Catholic communities hold Passion liturgies, Stations of the Cross, processions and dramatic reenactments. Some people abstain from meat and choose fish, but practices differ by faith, family and region. Easter Sunday remains a distinct observance two days later.
The Easter period can increase traffic on highways and demand for flights, buses, religious destinations and coastal resorts. Processions may also close streets temporarily. Confirm opening hours because local holiday rules affect attractions and services differently.
