The commemoration is linked to the return from exile of Sultan Mohammed V in November 1955 and the restoration of Moroccan sovereignty after the protectorate era. The independence process continued through 1956 and the later recovery of territories formerly under foreign control.
The holiday remembers cooperation between the monarchy, the national movement and the Moroccan people in the struggle for sovereignty and unity.
