History
The first Monday in May was added to Ireland's public-holiday calendar in 1994. It overlaps with international Labour Day themes but its legal scheduling rule is the first Monday rather than a fixed 1 May date.
Why it matters
Ireland has ten public holidays. The February holiday falls on the first Monday in February, except when 1 February is Friday. Good Friday is not one of the statutory public holidays. When a public holiday falls at the weekend, the employment benefit does not automatically turn the next Monday into a public holiday. The calendar therefore retains the actual dates of Christmas and St Stephen's Day without inventing substitute Mondays.
Observance
Many people take short breaks, attend local festivals or spend time outdoors. Labour organizations may separately mark International Workers' Day on 1 May.
