History
The feast of Saint Patrick developed as a Christian observance and became a major expression of Irish identity. Irish law expressly includes St Patrick's Day in the public-holiday schedule.
Why it matters
Ireland has ten public holidays. The February holiday falls on the first Monday in February, except when 1 February is Friday. Good Friday is not one of the statutory public holidays. When a public holiday falls at the weekend, the employment benefit does not automatically turn the next Monday into a public holiday. The calendar therefore retains the actual dates of Christmas and St Stephen's Day without inventing substitute Mondays.
Observance
Parades, festivals, music and community events take place across Ireland. Churches also hold services connected with the saint's feast.
