Official sources and date status
Recorded confirmation and independent source review are shown separately. An institution-specific notice does not establish closure for every employer or school.
Office arrangements
Italian national holiday. Municipal patron-saint holidays require a separate local calendar; no automatic weekday replacement is added.
Bank arrangements
Bank hours and settlement calendars require the institution's own notice. A public-holiday occurrence does not establish every branch's opening hours.
School arrangements
Check the education authority and school calendar for term dates, vacations and institution-specific closures.
History
Italian May Day celebrations resumed after the fall of Fascism, and Law No. 260 of 1949 placed 1 May in the national holiday framework.
Why it matters
Italy's national calendar includes Republic Day on 2 June, Liberation Day on 25 April and St Francis of Assisi on 4 October. Law 151 of 2025 restores 4 October as a national holiday from 2026; a Sunday occurrence does not create an extra Monday closure. Patron-saint holidays depend on the municipality and are not added to the national calendar. National Unity Sunday is an observance rather than another weekday closure.
Observance
Trade unions hold rallies and public meetings. Rome traditionally hosts a large concert, while local events vary across the country.
Travel and planning
Check the actual date, region and confirmation status shown here before arranging travel or leave. Local-only occurrences are not a nationwide closure.
