Public holiday dates and applicability

Provisional · Scope: public · Checked 2026-09-27

2028 recurring-calendar projection; the official page currently lists 2026 and 2027. Official Dutch public holiday; this does not itself establish a legal right to a day off. Check the collective agreement or employment contract.

Office arrangements

Official Dutch public holiday; this does not itself establish a legal right to a day off. Check the collective agreement or employment contract.

Bank arrangements

Bank hours and settlement calendars require the institution's own notice. A public-holiday occurrence does not establish every branch's opening hours.

School arrangements

Check the education authority and school calendar for term dates, vacations and institution-specific closures.

History

The Dutch observance reflects the opening of the Gregorian calendar. It forms part of the public-holiday calendar published by the Government of the Netherlands, while employment arrangements remain governed separately by CAOs and individual contracts.

Why it matters

The official Dutch holiday list includes Good Friday, both Easter days, Liberation Day on 5 May, Ascension, both Pentecost days and both Christmas days. Being on this list does not itself give an employee a legal right to leave. Collective agreements and employment contracts determine time off, including Liberation Day arrangements. The government publishes dated 2026 and 2027 lists; 2028 entries are recurring-calendar projections.

Observance

Common observance includes New Year’s Eve fireworks, gatherings and the traditional nieuwjaarsduik. Participation and opening hours vary by municipality, organization and household.

Travel and planning

Check the actual date, region and confirmation status shown here before arranging travel or leave. Local-only occurrences are not a nationwide closure.
