About New Year's Day

New Year’s Day is recorded in Ukraine’s statutory holiday calendar on 1 January each year. During martial law, that calendar identity does not by itself guarantee a nationwide non-working day.

Official sources and date status

Recorded confirmation and independent source review are shown separately. An institution-specific notice does not establish closure for every employer or school.

Official holiday calendar or legal framework

Provisional · Scope: public · Checked 2026-10-01

Provisional under the recurring rule or pending annual/operational confirmation. Ukraine statutory holiday dates are shown as provisional because Article 73 and automatic substitution are suspended while martial law applies. They must not be read as guaranteed non-working days.

Office arrangements

Do not assume automatic closure. During martial law, the ordinary Article 73 non-working-day rule is suspended; public bodies and employers set operations under applicable wartime law and their approved schedules.

Bank arrangements

A statutory holiday date is not proof that every bank branch will close during martial law. Check the National Bank, the relevant bank and payment cut-off notices for the year.

School arrangements

School opening, remote-learning and event arrangements depend on education-authority decisions, local security conditions and the institution’s schedule.

History

The observance concerns the first day of the civil calendar year. The date shown follows the current text of Article 73 of Ukraine’s Labour Code, while the special labour regime under martial law suspends the ordinary application of Article 73.

Why it matters

New Year’s Day identifies 1 January in Ukraine’s statutory calendar, but its practical importance during martial law is primarily calendrical: Article 73 does not currently guarantee automatic time off. Institutions must publish their own operating arrangements.

Observance

New Year traditions centre on the change of the civil year and private seasonal gatherings. Public events and access arrangements remain subject to current security restrictions.

Travel and planning

Confirm curfews, air-raid procedures, transport timetables and venue notices close to travel. No automatic substitute date is inferred when the observance falls on a weekend.

Frequently asked questions

When is New Year’s Day?

It falls on 1 January each year.

Is it automatically a day off?

No. While martial law remains in force, Article 73’s ordinary holiday and non-working-day provisions do not automatically apply.

Are banks, offices and schools closed?

Not universally. Check the responsible institution and current official notices.
