The Dutch observance reflects the Christian commemoration of the descent of the Holy Spirit. It forms part of the public-holiday calendar published by the Government of the Netherlands, while employment arrangements remain governed separately by CAOs and individual contracts.
The official Dutch holiday list includes Good Friday, both Easter days, Liberation Day on 5 May, Ascension, both Pentecost days and both Christmas days. Being on this list does not itself give an employee a legal right to leave. Collective agreements and employment contracts determine time off, including Liberation Day arrangements. The government publishes dated 2026 and 2027 lists; 2028 entries are recurring-calendar projections.
Common observance includes church services, festivals and family leisure during the Whitsun weekend. Participation and opening hours vary by municipality, organization and household.
