History
All Saints Day commemorates the saints of the Christian tradition. In Ireland it retains religious and cultural relevance, while the legal public-holiday list is separately defined by the Organisation of Working Time Act and later regulations.
Why it matters
Ireland has ten public holidays. The February holiday falls on the first Monday in February, except when 1 February is Friday. Good Friday is not one of the statutory public holidays. When a public holiday falls at the weekend, the employment benefit does not automatically turn the next Monday into a public holiday. The calendar therefore retains the actual dates of Christmas and St Stephen's Day without inventing substitute Mondays.
Observance
Some churches celebrate Mass or services and individuals may visit family graves. Observance is generally local and religious rather than a nationwide civic shutdown.
