History
5 U.S.C. §6103 designates the second Monday in October as Columbus Day. States and local governments may use different names or observe different occasions on that date.
Why it matters
The federal calendar follows OPM for employees on a standard Monday-to-Friday schedule. Saturday holidays generally have a Friday observed date and Sunday holidays a Monday observed date. The original occasion and its observed closure are separate entries. New Year's Day 2028 is observed on 31 December 2027; the closure is therefore shown in the 2027 calendar. Juneteenth and Washington's Birthday use their federal identities. State holidays, school breaks and private-employer closures are not implied.
