History
Labor Day is the first Monday in September under federal law. It recognizes workers and the labour movement and has been a federal holiday since 1894.
Why it matters
The federal calendar follows OPM for employees on a standard Monday-to-Friday schedule. Saturday holidays generally have a Friday observed date and Sunday holidays a Monday observed date. The original occasion and its observed closure are separate entries. New Year's Day 2028 is observed on 31 December 2027; the closure is therefore shown in the 2027 calendar. Juneteenth and Washington's Birthday use their federal identities. State holidays, school breaks and private-employer closures are not implied.
Observance
Labour-related events and community activities may mark the day, while many people use the Monday weekend for leisure. No uniform programme is federally required.
