History
International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was established in 1999 by United Nations and UN Women through A/RES/54/134. The first observance recorded by the establishing programme was in 2000. The official source remains the reference point for changes to the date, designation or annual campaign. The date is stored independently from country calendars so a global observance is never mistaken for a legal closure.
