Official sources and date status
Recorded confirmation and independent source review are shown separately. An institution-specific notice does not establish closure for every employer or school.
Office arrangements
Federal pay and leave calendar for the usual Monday-Friday schedule. State, local and private-employer arrangements can differ.
Bank arrangements
Bank hours and settlement calendars require the institution's own notice. A public-holiday occurrence does not establish every branch's opening hours.
School arrangements
Check the education authority and school calendar for term dates, vacations and institution-specific closures.
History
Memorial Day developed from Decoration Day remembrance after the Civil War and is now fixed federally on the last Monday in May. Its purpose is to honor U.S. military personnel who died in service.
Why it matters
The federal calendar follows OPM for employees on a standard Monday-to-Friday schedule. Saturday holidays generally have a Friday observed date and Sunday holidays a Monday observed date. The original occasion and its observed closure are separate entries. New Year's Day 2028 is observed on 31 December 2027; the closure is therefore shown in the 2027 calendar. Juneteenth and Washington's Birthday use their federal identities. State holidays, school breaks and private-employer closures are not implied.
Observance
National and local observances include cemetery ceremonies, flags and remembrance of the war dead. It should not be described as the same occasion as Veterans Day.
Travel and planning
Check the actual date, region and confirmation status shown here before arranging travel or leave. Local-only occurrences are not a nationwide closure.
