History
Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, marking the end of First World War fighting on November 11, 1918. Congress renamed it in 1954 to honor American veterans of all wars and restored observance to November 11 beginning in 1978.
Why it matters
The federal calendar follows OPM for employees on a standard Monday-to-Friday schedule. Saturday holidays generally have a Friday observed date and Sunday holidays a Monday observed date. The original occasion and its observed closure are separate entries. New Year's Day 2028 is observed on 31 December 2027; the closure is therefore shown in the 2027 calendar. Juneteenth and Washington's Birthday use their federal identities. State holidays, school breaks and private-employer closures are not implied.
Observance
VA coordinates the national observance, while ceremonies, parades and tributes honor living and deceased veterans. Its purpose differs from Memorial Day’s focus on those who died in service.
