History
World Press Freedom Day was established in 1993 by United Nations and UNESCO through UN General Assembly decision 48/432. The first observance recorded by the establishing programme was in 1994. The official source remains the reference point for changes to the date, designation or annual campaign. The date is stored independently from country calendars so a global observance is never mistaken for a legal closure.
